A TASTE OF… BEWITCHING BHUTAN
Kingdom of Bhutan
Hemmed in between China, India and the peaks of the Himalayas lies a well-kept travel secret: a Buddhist kingdom with majestic monasteries, rolling hills and emerald-green rice fields. In the land of the thunder dragon, industry is an unknown quantity, but according to the king, the gross national happiness is one of the highest in the world.
After a restful first night of your incentive trip spent in Delhi, India, you fly over the snow-capped Mount Everest to Thimpu, the only capital in the world with no high-rises or traffic lights. You feel as though you are on a film set when walking among the wooden houses, stalls with precious handiwork and locals in traditional clothing. In the evening, a warm welcome awaits you in the new luxury traditional-style Taj Tashi Hotel, where you dine to the accompaniment of musicians.
The next day, you are driven past an amazing 108 stupas to the old winter capital, where you reach the majestic 17th century Phunaka Dzong monastery via a suspension bridge. After a hospitable lunch in the town, you are ready to tackle the churning waters of the “Mother River” on a raft. The adrenaline will flow! The following day, you change the panorama of the jagged mountain tops and raging torrents for the stunningly beautiful wooded valley of Paro.
Here you compete for the trophy in an archery competition, the national sport of Bhutan. After a banquet with participants and supporters, you can exchange ideas with the spiritual leader. Even your luxury hotel in Paro has something otherworldly about it: the entire interior, with its painted wood carvings, is completely crafted by hand.
But the absolute high point of your trip takes place on the following day: you climb along a winding path to a height of 3,500 metres, to where Taktsang Palphug Monastery, or the Tiger’s Nest, perches between fluttering colourful prayer flags. Before embarking on your homeward journey, you stop in Delhi to take a rickshaw ride to the bazaars and explore this World Heritage Site.
This is not just any old trip; it is an exceptional experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
